This beautiful novel is written by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini. His other famous novel is The Kite Runner. A Thousand Splendid Suns title is taken from well known poem 'Kabul' written by Saib-e-Tabrizi (persian poet) . This poem is very famous in Afghanistan. The poem reads "One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs, or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls." Now here Thousand splendid suns refers to the women of Kabul (Afghan society) . Moon represents male head of a family. So like moon they shimmers on its roof and women hide themselves from the outer world. Their beauty , charm and power is compared to a splendid suns. So the theme of this novel deals with female sufferings under Taliban.

Herat and Kabul. Characters are beautifully written. It also tells us about the condition of a women under Taliban where women is just a medium of reproduction. In last chapter removal of Taliban is a positive thing for Afghan women.
